Guess which GOP lady has the moral backbone of a chocolate eclair?
It might surprise you. It might not.
Hello, Fierce fam! First off, I want to thank all of you who gave me feedback on how often you’d like Fierce to be hitting your inboxes. Most of you suggested 1-2x per week, so here’s the plan going forward: I’ll keep to the every Friday schedule for the main newsletter with the big information download, but add a Tuesday edition that takes a deeper dive into one issue. To begin with, the Tuesday edition will profile a different GOP freshman woman, so we can learn more about them and take a look at their (hopefully!) conservative bona fides.
We can, of course, pivot as necessary and make adjustments when needed. Ultimately, I’d love to move to a more robust email platform and even put up a website at Fierce.News (I own the domain!) when we’re ready to take that step. This will give all of you more control over how you receive the content. The question, of course, is: are there any tech service providers out there that welcome conservatives? I can’t even believe I have to type that, but that seems to be where we’re at. Hit me up at realfiercenews@gmail.com or tchristoph@protonmail.com if you have any suggestions.
Anyway, on with this week’s newsletter!
In some ways, not a lot has changed in the past week. Rep. Lauren Boebert continues to be a complete badass and Rep. Nancy Mace continues to put her in face in front any news camera she can find. In other ways, cripe almighty, everything has changed. Please see above reference to tech providers silencing conservatives for daring to have different opinions.
The second impeachment of President Trump took place this week in the House of Representatives, prompting some so-called conservatives to show their true colors. Yes, they are certainly trying to position themselves within the GOP for the post-Trump world. Some have their eyes squarely on 2024, principles be damned. But, mostly, they proved themselves to be fair-weathered friends to the conservative grassroots.
This lack of courage by some prominent Republicans has prompted me to start the Moral Backbone of a Chocolate Eclair Award. This award will be given, as needed, to those “conservatives” who turn their backs on the grassroots — you know, the people who actually do all the legwork to get candidates elected — to score cheap political points. When political posturing becomes more important than principle, you’ve lost me and, I suspect, a lot of you all, too.
(I give all credit to comedian John Mulaney for the name of this award. He’s a liberal, yes, but really, really funny. Read more here.)
Without further ado, the very first Moral Backbone of a Chocolate Eclair Award goes to none other than Nikki Haley. First elected (as one of the very first Tea Party candidates, mind you) in 2009 as governor of South Carolina, her star really rose when President Trump appointed her U.S. Ambassador to the UN. And, all credit to her, she did a great job there. But, mindful of her career, she has delighted in turning on Trump when it suits her, including in a recent speech to the RNC. The Federalist has a great piece on Nikki Haley’s opportunistic tendencies here. Voter beware.
To be honest, Rep. Liz Cheney was a VERY close second and certainly deserves an honorable mention for voting to impeach President Trump. When the Dems embrace you, you’ve got some issues. Our ladies over at Smart Girl Politics have some advice for Rep. Cheney below.
Enough with the bad news! The really good news is that the Fierce Force, including Nancy Mace, was fighting all the right battles this week. None of them voted for impeachment, and most spoke very passionately against it. Similarly, they took Big Tech to task for silencing conservative voices. And some are even looking at starting an impeachment effort of their own.
Speaking of Big Tech, they took Parler away from us last week, so a lot of us are migrating to other platforms. I’m still on Twitter, mostly to keep up with the ladies, but I’m also taking MeWe for a test drive. I can’t ever seem to access my Gab account, but I’ll keep trying! Please drop me a line and let me know the platforms you’re finding useful.
As always, keep the faith! Please feel fee to reach out to me at any time if you need anything or have some ideas on how to improve the newsletter or grow the Fierce community.
In Liberty,
Teri Christoph
